Troop Elections

Troop 199 had its elections the other week. The Troop elected a SPL and each Patrol elected a Patrol Leader. The next week the SPL picked his ASPLs, Scribe and Chaplain Aide. The PLs picked their APLs and I picked the Troop Guides. All are members of the PLC and all will be attending Troop Leader Training this weekend. How do you do elections? A few weeks beforehand we announce them and make Election Forms available. NOT turning in a form does not exclude you from running but those that do are asked to stand before the elections. Those filling out the form also put down their other choices for non-elected positions (QM, Historian, Scribe) which are then given to the new SPL so he can hand out those assignments. With a Troop this large (126) we have agreed on 50% +1 to win SPL. This year we had 3 candidates who split the vote almost 3 ways. The top 2 had a run off and the new SPL was sworn in. These guys will lead the Troop for the next 6 months.

The Scouts are in charge of their Troop and know their voices were heard for leadership. As Scoutmaster I say nothing during the process as to not sway the vote any one way. When my son ran I actually left the room. What is your process?
